Deer Resistant Plants! How to keep deer out of you garden.

Deer Resistant Plants
A rodent with antlers was the most recent description I was given for the deer in my neighborhood. The stories of losses include; prize Daylilies, Hydrangeas, Hostas, too many varieties of roses, all of them gone in the morning. What is a gardener to do? Turn in your spade? The best suggestion is to try to grow more types of deer resistant plants. The other option, fencing the property with an eight foot deer fence, most people would find that just a bit impractical.
The starting point would be to determine what plant material you will want to plant, replace or hide. The trees you select will be the bones that will surround the house and give everything structure. Here is a brief list of some deer resistant trees; Japanese Maple, Red Maple, Heritage Birch, Kousa Dogwood, Sugar Maple, Sourwood, Golden Rain Tree, Gingko, Japanese Flowering Cherry, Chinese Fringe tree, Dwarf Alberta Spruce, Japanese Black Pine.
The next plants would be shrubs and some examples of deer resistant shrubs are; Juniper, Nandina, Viburnum, Weigela, Barberry, Holly, Spiraea, Mock Orange, Mountain Laurel and Rhododendron.
Vines would include Wisteria, Winter Jasmine, Bittersweet and Carolina Jessamine.
Perennials include a rather extensive list with some of the highly fragrant herbs actually repel deer. These herbs include Catnip, Chives, Lavender, Mint, Rosemary, Sage, Thyme, and Garlic. Since perennials forms such a large group I am simply going to give you the plants that are some of my favorites that are also deer resistant: Astilbe, Asters, Butterfly Weed, Hellebores, Crocosmia, Daffodils, Cranesbill Geranium, Tiarella, Iris, Coreopsis, Russian Sage and Speedwell.
Annuals to select for deer resistance include; Basil, Marigolds, Flowering Tobacco, Geraniums, Lobelia, Sweet William, Spider Flower and Zinnias.
